Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
