Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
