An Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, found a table, and began chatting with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
